An EV charger that repeatedly trips its breaker has one of five causes: the circuit is undersized or shared with other loads, a connection has worked loose, the breaker or charger is overheating, a GFCI/AFCI device is conflicting with the charger’s own ground-fault electronics, or the charging equipment itself is failing. In San Diego’s older housing stock — especially pre-1980 homes in neighborhoods like Normal Heights, North Park, and Golden Hill that still run 100-amp panels — the circuit is the culprit far more often than the charger.
Is my circuit actually rated for EV charging?
A Level 2 charger is one of the largest continuous loads in any home. The National Electrical Code requires continuous loads to run at no more than 80% of breaker rating: a 40-amp breaker legally supports 32 amps of charging, a 50-amp breaker supports 40 amps. If your charger is set to draw the breaker’s full rating, it will heat the breaker until it trips — every time, usually 20–40 minutes into a session. The fix is either dialing the charger’s current setting down or installing a properly sized dedicated circuit. A dryer outlet shared with a garage freezer is not a dedicated circuit.
Why does the breaker trip only on hot days?
Breakers are thermal devices: they trip on heat, not just current. A garage in Santee, Poway, or Ramona that hits 100°F+ in a September heat wave lowers the effective trip threshold, so a circuit that behaved all spring starts tripping in summer. Aluminum feeder wiring and corroded lugs — common in decades-old panels — add resistance heat on top. The sentence worth remembering: a breaker that trips only in hot weather is warning you about heat somewhere in the circuit, and loose connections are the most dangerous source of that heat.
When is a tripping charger an electrical emergency?
Stop charging immediately if you notice a burning smell, a warm outlet faceplate, buzzing at the panel, or scorch marks at the receptacle. NEMA 14-50 receptacles not rated for continuous EV duty are a documented fire pattern — the receptacle degrades after months of nightly 32-amp charging. Could the charger itself be the problem?
Yes, though it’s the least common cause. Test by charging at a public station or borrowing a portable EVSE: if the car charges cleanly elsewhere, your home equipment or circuit is at fault; if every charger trips, the vehicle’s onboard charger may be leaking current to ground and belongs at the dealer. Can I plug a Level 2 charger into my dryer outlet?
Only with a proper splitter product or a transfer switch, and only if the circuit is in good condition — and never an extension cord. A shared or degraded dryer circuit is a common trip source and a fire risk under continuous load.
How many amps do I actually need for home charging?
Most San Diego commuters recover their daily miles overnight at 32–40 amps. Bigger isn’t automatically better: a 48-amp hardwired charger requires a 60-amp circuit that many 100-amp panels can’t spare without a panel upgrade.
Does an EV charger require a permit in California?
Yes — EV charger circuits require an electrical permit from your local jurisdiction (the City of San Diego and County both process these), and AB 1236 requires jurisdictions to streamline approval. A licensed contractor handles the permit and inspection.
Will charging my EV overload a 100-amp panel?
Sometimes — it depends on the load calculation. Options short of a full panel upgrade include a lower charger amperage or a load-management device that pauses charging while big appliances run.
Should the breaker feel warm?
Slightly warm is normal under continuous load; hot to the touch is not. A hot breaker or panel face means shut down charging and get the circuit inspected.
